Provisions Series: Gunga Galunga by The Bruery

Provisions Series: Gunga Galunga. The Bruery. Placentia, California.

Fall 2010.

COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
A black beer with Thai influence. Brewed with brettanomyces, kaffir lime leaves and galangal (also known as Thai Ginger, but it’s not too ginger-like), this smooth, dry and roasty beer has clear notes of fresh citrus, crushed herbs and will complement a spicy curry beautifully.

My review on RateBeer:

AHTOH (3) - San Diego, USA - OCT 23, 2010
UPDATED: OCT 26, 2010 750 mL bottle. Purchased at Bruery Provisions in Orange, CA. Poured into Bruery tulip glass. Beer pours opaque black. Light tan, caramel head. Somewhat frothy head that lingers for some time before settling as a thin, translucent layer atop the beer. Strong aroma of the kaffir lime leaves. Citrus and spice. Hints of coffee, toasty flavors from the dark malts. Unable to pick out aromas of the galanga root as have never ate/smelt it, however, do sense subtle aromas of sweet red liquorice (?). Roasted malty flavor on front palate. Kaffir lime leaves on mid palate. Delicious funky/slightly sourish/Brett flavor all throughout the palate that lingers for quite some time. Also a tiny bit of an enjoyable peppery, spicy aftertaste. Mouth feel slightly more carbonated than typical for such a dark ale. Expected it to be just a tad more funky, saison-esque due to the 100% brett, however, quite an interesting black ale.
