12 ounce bottle (bottled on 3/1/10) poured into Duvel tulip. Pours hazy burnt orange. Light beige head settles fairly quickly, leaving small amount of off-white foam along edge of glass and a low cluster of foam in the middle. Thin film of dusted foam throughout rest of surface area. Pine hops as well as grassy hops on nose. Hints of vanilla aroma from the oak, though the vanilla seems slightly chocolatey. Subtle aroma of soft woody earthiness; from oak-aged portion. Some malt sweetness, which seems tropical/floral/honey-ish when amongst the hops. Nicely balanced aroma. Primary taste is hop bite. Some vanilla. Taste much less balanced between hops and malt than aroma. Grassy hops on front palate. Mid palate has some honey-ish malty sweetness, though it is largely masked by pleasant hop bitterness. Back of palate has some of the vanilla and woody oak taste. Some alcohol warmth in finish. Mouth feel is sharp and somewhat prickly. Overall, great ale that would pair especially well with spicy foods and sharp cheeses.
